A Brief History

» A Brief History of The Pittsburgh Fellows

Fall, 2003 – Dr. Peter Moore (National Director of The Fellows Initiative) and Becca Chapman (Associate Director of The Fellows Initiative) consider starting a Pittsburgh  program as part of a nationwide push for more Fellows Programs, each designed around the unique distinctives of a city or region.

Pittsburgh was in need of attracting and keeping talented young people who would bring godly, ethical leadership to the business community.   A business and corporate focus was selected for Pittsburgh Fellows, while other programs around the country focus on government, ministry, non-profits, drama and the arts, etc..

December, 2003 Dr. Moore, Becca Chapman, and Trinity students from Falls Church Fellows describe the vision to interested church and business leaders at St. Stephens Church.

Because several key business leaders and an energetic working volunteer board caught the vision, program plans gained momentum in early 2004. Seven employers agreed to provide internships, housing was secured, and students were recruited and admitted.

September, 2004First Pittsburgh Fellows class begins with seven Fellows from five universities.

May, 2005 First Pittsburgh Fellows class graduates and four Fellows continue with full-time employment.

Each year, additional employers have joined the effort and more schools have sent students to the Pittsburgh Fellows Program.

September, 2009 – Fifth class of Pittsburgh Fellows enters the program

Currently:  15 of the 29 Pittsburgh Fellows Alums still live and work in the Pittsburgh area.  Many have continued at their original job placement, working up to more senior positions.   The wonderful Fellows Board works together to oversee everything from finance to mentors, from admissions to hospitality. We have gathered an impressive array of Pittsburgh companies which support us by hiring our Fellows for the nine-month program, and many Fellows are asked to remain at their places of employment. Executives of these companies also support our program by speaking to our Fellows and hosting events at their homes.
