The Pittsburgh Fellows program has been an incredible season of learning and growth for me,
both professionally and personally. One of the biggest lessons I’ve embraced is the importance of intentionality, choosing to see challenges as opportunities and staying grounded in gratitude.
A piece of advice from my mentor, James, really stuck with me. He said, “Be proactive in finding problems and solving them for your manager. No one is taught how to give work, so you need to find it and take initiative. And don’t forget to ask for what you want to learn—your time is limited, so make it count!” That perspective changed how I approach my role. Instead of waiting to be handed assignments, I look for ways to add value and proactively search for new and specific ways to help.
One challenge that I faced upon entering the Pittsburgh Fellows program was moving away
from my family and friends in Chicago. I felt out of place being in a new environment. But I told
myself to approach this experience with an open mind. Over time, I’ve come to think of it as
“adulting with training wheels.” This experience has helped me build independence and
resilience, and the fellowship community has been a huge source of support as I’ve navigated
these changes.
Spiritually, this program has been just as impactful. Through Bible studies and mentorship, I’ve
learned to trust God more deeply, especially in uncertain times. A discussion during one of our
Friday classes about balancing ambition with faith really hit home for me. It reminded me that
while working hard is important, real peace comes from trusting God’s plan.
The mentorship has been a game-changer for me. James’s advice has shaped how I think about my career and helped me focus on taking initiative and staying curious. It’s given me the
confidence to step up and tackle challenges head-on.
And the Fellows community? It’s been the heart of this experience. From sharing meals to deep conversations, the people here have encouraged me every step of the way. I’m so grateful for how this program has equipped me to grow, face challenges, and approach life with a stronger sense of purpose and gratitude.
