When I was a senior at Cedarville University, I listened to my peers talk about their jobs and where they were going after school. Some students were staying near the university, returning home, or moving to a new city. Hearing about their plans made me think deeply about mine and where I would go. I have always been one for seeking new experiences and the idea of moving to a new city like some of my peers enthralled me.
In my heart, however, I was scared and felt that I would struggle and fail trying to build a life away from my home in Bellevue, Ohio. I thought moving to another state was crazy and impossible for me, but God had other plans. As I was looking for jobs, I found the Fellows Program. A community of believers set on building Christian leaders in the workforce. I was in love with the idea of expanding my experience through work opportunities and learning to mold my character after Christ through speakers, Bible studies, and a supportive Christian community. Though the Fellows Program was 3 hours from my home, I knew I could ask questions and learn about life in Pittsburgh with the help of the Fellows community. I found peace and felt safe about moving, knowing I would not be alone. I could find community and adventure in Pittsburgh.
The first month was hard, and I cried after my parents left after move-in. I doubted what I was doing and everything became real to me. Embracing the change was so impactful in my adjustment. We spent time as a cohort exploring the city, getting to know each other, and learning from our program activities. I talked with my employer and Program Director about any concerns I found along the way. The feedback I got was gracious and empowering. After living in the mountains of Pittsburgh and participating in the Fellows Program for over 6 months, I can say that my confidence has grown immensely. I am capable of succeeding in a new environment when I trust God, seek to learn, and embrace the change.
